What causes acne?
Acne results from abnormal activity
within hair follicles or pores...
Pores are the tiny openings in the skin and they are found all over the body
except palms and soles. The medical term for a pore is hair follicle. Every pore
is connected to a sebaceous gland where the production of sebum occurs.
There are two types of pores in the skin, namely, normal pores and acne-prone pores. Normal pores are lined with specialized cells called keratinocytes. In contrast to normal pores...
Acne pores are dependant on 4 main factors:
1) the body’s increased production of the hormone
androgen which stimulates the sebaceous glands
to produce more oil.
2) abnormally enlarged sebaceous glands (genetics)
3) abnormal overproduction of the keratinocytes inside
4) microbial colonization of the pilosebaceous unit
5) inflammatory reaction of the perifollicular area
In other words, with the abnormal excess formation of keratin cells and oil from the sebaceous gland on the inside of the pore or hair follicle creates a white thick like plug. It can remain dormant and uninfected and stay as a whitehead (sits underneath the skin) or blackhead (exposed plug to air) not doing alot of harm. A white head is a plug under the surface and a blackhead is a plug that has emerged through to the open surface which turns black when coming into contact with oxgen (air)-its oxidized. However, sometimes these whiteheads and blackheads become infected, and the inside of the pore becomes inflammed, sore and produces pus which is blocked and built up inside the pore. This becomes a swollen and painful pimple or sebeous cystic lesion.
ACNE TREATMENT AT RENU U
The good news is that our acne treatments aim at reversing the biological causes of acne, helping to reduce the number of blackheads and active lesions. At RENU U we offer an affordable comprehensive treatment programme using a combination of exfoliation, anti-microbials, gentle mechanical extraction, de-karatinising agents , blue light therapy and RF SGA (sebaceous gland ablation) therapy.
Anti-microbials- we use a gentle non-irritating cleanser that contains a hospital grade anti-microbial. Our gentle mechanical extraction technique is applied to gentley to remove existing pus from active lesions and blackheads.
De-keratinising agents We use either a solution of azelaic acid or glycolic acid which goes deep
into the overactive glands helping to sweep out clogged up keratin cells cause the blockage in the gland in the first place. Continued daily use of this will help keep the over-keratinisation of your pores at bay, thereby limiting the formation of new lesions.
Blue light LED therapy: Blue light therapy has been clinically proven to kill the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria responsible for acne, and helps shrink the size of the sebaceous glands, thereby reducing the amount of oil secreted. We use our blue LED therapy to achieve this.
SGA or sebaceous gland ablation We also use a new treatment called SGA which uses radio frequency to destroy the sebaceous gland in the pore thereby making it dormant. It is particularly good for repetitive acne spots that keep coming back in the same area.
